This month, the Animal photography competition will be judged by Charlotte Dumas, a Dutch photographer who has produced numerous works exploring our relationship with animals and nature. The competition's subject is "Animal," which encompasses people, creatures, birds, insects, and imaginary beings, all of whom have the capacity to care for and understand each other, as well as themselves. By paying attention to other creatures, we can create a diverse and rich society. The theme is open to interpretation, and we are looking forward to receiving a wide variety of submissions, including photographs of significant people, a series that explores the mysteries of creatures, or works that challenge our current society and its perspectives. The submission period runs from February 24 to April 24, with an application fee of 2,000 JPY per entry. The judge, Charlotte Dumas, is known for her work centered on the idea that our relationship with animals can provide insight into the state of humanity. She is interested in exploring how we define value in relation to animals, much like we do with other people. Throughout her career, Dumas has produced a range of works, including short films such as Anima (2012), which features the funeral horses of Arlington National Cemetery, and Work Horse (2015), which focuses on working horses in the North of Sweden. More recently, she has worked on a film project from 2018 to 2021 centered on a small Japanese island and its native horses, resulting in three short films titled Shio, Yorishiro, and Ao.
