Working Assumptions is committed to supporting visual storytelling projects that explore the complexity, diversity, and emotional realities of family life. Each year, the organization awards six unrestricted Project Grants of $10,000 to photographers and artists whose work invites audiences and participants to engage with family in new and meaningful ways. Through this program, Working Assumptions seeks to encourage projects that deepen public understanding of connection, identity, caregiving, memory, and the evolving structures of contemporary family experience.
We invite proposals from artists, photographers, educators, researchers, and storytellers working across a broad spectrum of photographic and photo-based practices. Eligible projects may take journalistic, documentary, artistic, therapeutic, educational, or research-oriented forms, reflecting the wide-ranging possibilities of visual storytelling today. We welcome work that is intimate and personal as well as projects that address broader social, cultural, or political themes connected to family and community.
Central to the philosophy of the Project Grant is a belief in artistic trust and creative independence. The funding is fully unrestricted, allowing recipients complete freedom to determine how best to realize and develop their work. Whether the grant supports travel, production, collaboration, materials, research, or dedicated creative time, the intention is to remove barriers and provide meaningful support for projects with strong public potential.
To be eligible, projects must already be underway before the grant application deadline and should ultimately be intended for public presentation or engagement. By investing in artists working at the intersection of photography and storytelling, Working Assumptions aims to foster work that resonates across audiences while expanding conversations around family, relationships, and the shared human experience.
