Women Photojournalism Award 2025

The Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award stands as a tribute to the indomitable spirit and groundbreaking work of Anja Niedringhaus (1965–2014), a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist who dedicated her life to capturing powerful and often haunting images from some of the most challenging parts of the world. With a generous $1 million gift from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, this award was created to continue Anja’s mission: shining a light on untold stories, amplifying voices often overlooked, and upholding the truth through the power of visual storytelling.

The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) is committed to recognizing and supporting women, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming photojournalists whose work exemplifies the same courage and commitment as Anja’s. These photographers risk their safety, endure immense hardships, and navigate complex environments to document war zones, social injustices, humanitarian crises, and acts of resilience—all with the goal of bringing awareness and change. Their images have the power to educate, influence, and move people to action, often revealing realities the world might otherwise ignore.

In honor of this dedication, the recipient of the Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award will be granted a $20,000 prize, along with the opportunity to have their work displayed in a prestigious award ceremony. The IWMF encourages both self-applications and third-party nominations, which can be submitted in English until March 14, 2025. Before submitting, please carefully review the eligibility requirements and nomination guidelines. Eligible applicants must be full-time professional photojournalists who identify as women, nonbinary, or gender non-conforming, and they can be from any country worldwide.

This award is not just about honoring an individual—it’s about acknowledging the risks photojournalists take to bring truth to light and ensuring that their courageous work receives the recognition it deserves.
