Around the world, people are working to protect the places, species, and communities that sustain life. Their efforts often unfold far from public attention, in forests and oceans, rural landscapes and urban neighborhoods, threatened habitats and communities adapting to a rapidly changing environment. Vital Impacts exists to help bring these stories into view.
Vital Impacts is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that uses journalism and visual storytelling to amplify the voices and work of people and communities protecting wildlife, habitats, and human communities around the globe. By supporting photographers and other storytellers, the organization seeks not only to document the environmental challenges facing our planet, but also to reveal the determination, creativity, knowledge, and hope of those working to address them.
The Vital Impacts Environmental Photography Fellowships and Mentorships are designed to support visual storytellers pursuing ambitious, long-term documentary photography projects centered on environmental and conservation issues. The program recognizes the unique ability of photography to make complex environmental stories visible and emotionally accessible, while connecting global challenges to the people whose lives and work are directly connected to them.
We are particularly interested in projects that look beyond the problem itself. Environmental photography can document deforestation, climate change, habitat loss, pollution, biodiversity decline, and other urgent challenges—but these issues are only part of the story. Equally important are the people responding to them: conservationists protecting endangered species, Indigenous communities defending traditional lands, scientists studying fragile ecosystems, local organizations restoring habitats, activists advocating for environmental justice, and communities creating new ways to live sustainably.
Vital Impacts seeks photographers who want to spend time with these stories and develop them over the long term. The fellowship and mentorship program is intended to give photographers the resources, guidance, and professional support needed to move beyond a series of isolated images and build meaningful, deeply reported bodies of work.
The program has two interconnected goals. Through financial support, it helps photographers dedicate the time and resources necessary to pursue important documentary projects. Through mentorship, it provides opportunities for photographers to develop their vision, strengthen their storytelling, navigate the challenges of long-term documentary work, and connect with experienced professionals in photography, journalism, conservation, and related fields.
Collaboration is central to the program. Vital Impacts believes that powerful environmental storytelling should be rooted in relationships with the people and organizations whose work is being documented. The program therefore encourages photographers to approach their subjects with respect, curiosity, and a commitment to meaningful engagement, recognizing communities not simply as subjects of stories but as essential participants in them.
Ultimately, the Vital Impacts Environmental Photography Fellowships and Mentorships seek to support photography that can inspire greater understanding and action. These are stories about environmental challenges, but they are also stories about people: their knowledge, resilience, creativity, leadership, and determination to protect the world they call home.
