Vital Impacts is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to using the power of journalism and visual storytelling to amplify the work of communities and individuals protecting people, wildlife, and ecosystems around the world. Through photography, reporting, mentorship, and financial support, the organization seeks to bring greater visibility to urgent environmental challenges while highlighting the people and communities developing solutions and creating meaningful change.

The Vital Impacts Environmental Photography Fellowships and Mentorships support visual storytellers undertaking ambitious, long-term documentary photography projects focused on environmental and conservation issues. The program is designed for photographers who are committed to developing substantial bodies of work that explore the complex relationships between people, wildlife, and the natural world, while giving particular attention to the individuals and communities working on the front lines of conservation.

Rather than focusing solely on the documentation of environmental damage or ecological crisis, Vital Impacts seeks stories that offer a deeper and more complete understanding of these challenges. We are particularly interested in projects that reveal the human dimension of conservation—stories about the people developing innovative approaches, protecting threatened habitats and species, preserving traditional knowledge, restoring ecosystems, advocating for their communities, and building sustainable pathways forward.

The program has a dual purpose. First, it provides financial support that enables photographers to pursue significant long-term projects, dedicate time and resources to their work, and produce photography with lasting impact. Second, it provides mentorship intended to help photographers strengthen their storytelling, refine their projects, and develop meaningful connections with experienced professionals and organizations working in the environmental and conservation fields.

At the heart of the program is a commitment to meaningful collaboration. Vital Impacts recognizes that effective environmental storytelling should be developed with respect for the communities and organizations whose stories are being documented. Fellows and mentees are encouraged to build relationships that go beyond observation, creating opportunities for collaboration, trust, and mutual understanding.

Through this combination of funding, mentorship, and community engagement, the Vital Impacts Environmental Photography Fellowships and Mentorships aim to support photographers whose work can contribute to a broader public understanding of environmental and conservation issues. The program seeks visual stories that not only make audiences aware of the challenges facing our planet, but also introduce them to the people working every day to address those challenges and create a more sustainable future.
