The Extremadura Association for UNESCO is proud to announce the launch of the ninth edition of the International Photography Prize Santiago Castelo, an event held in honor of Santiago Castelo, the distinguished founding president of the Extremadura Association for UNESCO. This prestigious international competition celebrates the enduring legacy of a man who was deeply committed to fostering cultural awareness and cooperation, particularly between neighboring regions in Spain and Portugal.
This year’s edition continues to emphasize the competition’s strong cross-border spirit, encouraging participation from both sides of the border that unites Spain and Portugal. The award specifically seeks to acknowledge and reward photographic works that, through the unique artistic vision and creative liberty of each photographer, are able to capture and convey fresh and meaningful interpretations of the rich cultural, monumental, natural, environmental, and human heritage present throughout the EUROACE Euroregion.
The EUROACE region—which comprises the Spanish region of Extremadura and the Portuguese regions of Alentejo and Centro—represents an expansive and diverse area, covering approximately one-sixth of the entire Iberian Peninsula. This immense territory is characterized by a broad variety of landscapes and ecosystems, ranging from the rugged Atlantic coastline to the serene, grassy plains of Alentejo and Extremadura. Within this geographical expanse lie cities and towns that are not only culturally vibrant but also steeped in historical and architectural significance. Notable examples include Évora, Coimbra, Elvas, Mérida, Cáceres, and Guadalupe—each of which is recognized for its exceptional heritage and historical relevance.
