Understanding the Official Categories: Guidelines for SubmissionWhen participating in international photography exhibitions or contests, it’s important that your submitted images strictly follow the guidelines set by the official recognizing organizations. To ensure eligibility and uniform judgment across the board, all entries must adhere to the strictest definitions of their respective categories. Below are the detailed IAAP definitions that every entrant should follow.
🔳 MonochromeMonochrome photography is more than just black and white — it’s the art of capturing a subject using only tones of gray, creating mood and depth without color. The image can range from deep shadows to bright highlights and everything in between. You may tone the image in a single hue, like a classic sepia, and it will still qualify.
However, as soon as multiple hues or selective coloring are added, the image no longer fits within the monochrome category and will instead be considered color photography. The goal is simplicity and tonal range — not color contrast.
🌿 NatureNature photography reveals the living and non-living wonders of the planet. Animals, insects, plants, weather patterns, geological formations — all of these are valid subjects. But the image must show them in their natural state, without interference or artificial enhancement.
Human-made elements can be present, but they must serve the story of nature rather than take center stage. Photographers are expected to uphold ethical standards, avoiding manipulation or staged scenes. The photograph should feel honest, raw, and respectful to the natural world it captures.
📰 PhotojournalismPhotojournalism is about truth. It’s about witnessing something real — whether it’s a moment of joy, conflict, struggle, or celebration — and capturing it as it happens. The photograph should convey a clear story without exaggeration or distortion.
There must be no staging, no special effects, and no retouching that could mislead the viewer. Your job as a photojournalist is to inform, not to embellish. Every image should uphold editorial integrity and reflect the truth of the subject or event.
🌍 TravelTravel photography is your visual passport to the world. It captures the essence of a place — not just what it looks like, but what it feels like. From local festivals to architectural marvels, quiet markets to sweeping landscapes, your photograph should take viewers on a journey.
Good travel photography is more than just a postcard. It tells a story about culture, people, scenery, or traditions — inviting others to see and feel the spirit of a destination.
