To ensure uniformity and fairness across international photography competitions and exhibitions, all entries must conform to the strictest version of the definitions provided by organizations that endorse or recognize the event. This alignment guarantees that accepted works meet the highest global standards. Below are the IAAP-recognized definitions of the main categories.
Monochrome PhotographyMonochrome images are photographs in black and white or in shades of gray, from the darkest black to the brightest white. These images depend on tone, contrast, and lighting to create emotion and atmosphere — without relying on color.
A monochrome photograph may be toned in a single uniform hue, such as sepia or cyan, and still be eligible. But if any part of the image has been selectively toned or altered with multiple hues or colors, it becomes a color photograph and is not eligible for submission as monochrome.
Nature PhotographyNature photography highlights the beauty and complexity of the natural world. This includes both living creatures like animals, birds, and insects, and non-living elements such as mountains, oceans, or weather patterns. The scene must be natural and authentic.
While people and man-made objects may be present, they should not be the main subject or visually dominant. The photograph should be truthful — no staging, no misleading edits, and no unethical interference with wildlife or the environment. The aim is to present nature as it truly is.
PhotojournalismPhotojournalism is about truth-telling through photography. These images capture real-life stories and moments — often newsworthy events or social situations — and must be unposed and unaltered. Authenticity is essential.
Manipulation of the subject or setting, or edits that misrepresent the actual scene, are strictly forbidden. The goal is to document reality, not to create fiction. Photojournalism must always uphold high ethical standards and seek to inform with integrity.
Travel PhotographyTravel photography brings a place to life through imagery. It’s more than just a scenic view — it’s about capturing the soul and uniqueness of a location. This can be expressed through landscapes, street scenes, cultural celebrations, architecture, people, or daily life.
The photo should transport viewers and give them a strong sense of being there. It must reflect what makes the location special, whether through natural beauty, historical significance, or local customs.
