Eligibility and Compliance with International Standards
All submitted entries must strictly adhere to the most rigorous definition applicable among the internationally recognized standards provided by the supporting organizations. Only submissions that meet the highest common threshold will be considered valid and accepted by the international bodies offering recognition or patronage for the exhibition or competition. Below are the official IAAP definitions for key photographic categories. Please review them carefully to ensure your submissions qualify.
IAAP Definition: Monochrome PhotographyA monochrome image is defined as a photograph rendered in black and white, incorporating a complete spectrum of tonal values from deep black through various shades of gray to pure white. This type of image emphasizes the play of light and shadow, as well as the subtleties of tonal gradation, without any use of color.
If the entire image is uniformly toned in a single hue — such as sepia or cyan — it may still be classified as monochrome. However, once the image features partial toning (selective color) or any additional coloring elements, it transitions into the category of color photography and no longer qualifies as monochrome.
IAAP Definition: Nature PhotographyNature photography is intended to document and celebrate the natural world, including both living (animate) and non-living (inanimate) subjects. The primary focus must remain on elements such as animals, plants, landscapes, or natural phenomena. While the inclusion of humans or human-made objects is permitted, such elements must not dominate the composition or distract from the natural subject matter.
Submissions must portray the scene authentically, avoiding artificial manipulation or unethical practices that could alter or misrepresent the subject or setting. Only natural-looking, truthful representations will be considered. High standards of technical excellence — including focus, exposure, and composition — are essential.
IAAP Definition: PhotojournalismPhotojournalism captures real-life moments, events, and subjects with the intention of conveying truthful, unbiased information to the viewer. This genre of photography plays a crucial role in documenting news, culture, social issues, and historical events. All images must be authentic, unaltered, and free of staging or manipulation.
Ethical integrity is fundamental to photojournalism. The photograph must reflect reality as it occurred, preserving the credibility of both the photographer and the story being told. Any editing or processing that misleads the viewer or distorts the factual nature of the event is strictly prohibited.
IAAP Definition: Travel PhotographyTravel photography aims to showcase the spirit and character of a specific location. A successful travel photograph immerses the viewer in the destination by capturing its unique cultural essence, scenic beauty, and everyday life. It can include landscapes, cityscapes, architecture, local people, customs, and traditions — all of which collectively reflect the identity and atmosphere of the place.
The objective is to present an image that not only informs but transports the viewer — enabling them to experience the diversity of global environments and societies through a single powerful visual narrative.
