The “Dresden Grant in Photography”, jointly awarded by the Dresdner Stiftung Kunst & Kultur der Ostsächsischen Sparkasse Dresden and the Technische Sammlungen Dresden, is dedicated to supporting photographers who demonstrate both artistic commitment and professional merit. Eligible applicants include independent or full-time photographers, as well as those holding an academic degree in the field of art or photography. A further requirement is that candidates must be able to show evidence of at least one significant public presentation of their work—either a solo exhibition or a published body of photographic work. Importantly, applicants must not be permanent residents of Dresden, ensuring that the grant brings new perspectives and fresh insights into the city.
The purpose of this residency program is to provide contemporary photographers with the freedom, resources, and time to realize their artistic vision while immersing themselves in the cultural and social life of Dresden. By offering a dedicated period of research and creation, the grant encourages participants to engage thoughtfully with the urban environment, its history, and its present-day transformations.
The program supports both artistic and documentary approaches, with a central emphasis on photography as a medium and process. While the photographic exploration of Dresden should play an essential role in the residency, the scope of the work is not narrowly confined to images of the city alone. Instead, the grant fosters projects that allow for open interpretation, experimentation, and creative dialogue. A meaningful presence in Dresden throughout the residency is expected, ensuring that participants can engage fully with the city and its community.
