The Kassel Fotobook Festival has been hosting the Kassel Dummy Award since 2010, inviting photographers to share their work on an international stage.
Participants have gained the opportunity to connect with galleries, publishers, and festivals, showcasing their photobooks to global audiences. Hundreds of shortlisted books have been exhibited at photography events and festivals worldwide, with thousands of prototypes submitted from photographers across the world.
In 2023, the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne took over the organization of the Dummy Award. This development aims to expand the award’s reach and significance for emerging photographers. Collaborating with MAS Matbaa in Istanbul, a leading name in photobook printing and publishing, ensures that the award continues to uphold its renowned quality and reputation.
The rules are as follows:Photographers worldwide are invited to participate annually. From the submissions, about 50 books are shortlisted and showcased at international photography events. Each exhibition venue casts a vote—either publicly or through curator selection—alongside votes from the shortlist jury. These votes decide the five winners.
The PBM/MAS Prize-winning book is fully funded, produced, and published by MAS Matbaa in partnership with the PhotoBookMuseum. The other four winners are awarded a production grant to print their books at MAS Matbaa.
