Since its inception in 2010, the Kassel Fotobook Festival has been inviting photographers from around the world to participate in the Kassel Dummy Award.

Participants have gained valuable connections with galleries, publishers, and festivals, while their photobooks have been showcased to international audiences. Over the years, hundreds of shortlisted books have been displayed at prominent photography events, festivals, and exhibitions, with thousands of prototypes submitted from photographers globally.

In 2023, the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne assumed responsibility for organizing the Dummy Award. This marks a new chapter that aims to further enhance its value for the next generation of photographers. Partnering with MAS Matbaa in Istanbul ensures the continuation of the award’s high standards and global reputation.

The process is simple:Each year, photographers worldwide are encouraged to submit their work. From the entries, about 50 books are shortlisted and displayed at major international photography events. Votes from the shortlist jury, along with those from each exhibiting venue (via public voting or curator selection), determine five winning books.

The PBM/MAS Prize winner’s book is fully funded, produced, and published by MAS Matbaa in collaboration with the PhotoBookMuseum. The other four winners receive a grant to print their books with MAS Matbaa.
