Since 2010, the Kassel Fotobook Festival has been inviting photographers to participate in its prestigious Kassel Dummy Award.

Photographers involved in the award have had opportunities to network with galleries, publishers, and festivals while showcasing their photobooks to an international audience. Hundreds of shortlisted books have been featured at various photography events, festivals, and exhibition spaces worldwide. Over the years, thousands of photobook prototypes have been submitted from photographers across the globe.

In 2023, the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne took over the management of the Dummy Award. This transition promises to elevate the significance of the award for emerging photographers and broaden its reach. In partnership with MAS Matbaa in Istanbul, a renowned printing and publishing house, the award will continue to maintain its exceptional quality and reputation.

The rules are straightforward:Photographers worldwide are invited to participate annually. A shortlist of around 50 books is selected and exhibited at international photography events. Each exhibiting venue casts a vote—either through public choice or a curator's selection—alongside the votes of the shortlist jury. From these, five winners are chosen.

The PBM/MAS Prize-winning book is produced and published by MAS Matbaa, with all costs covered. The remaining four winners receive a production grant to print their books at MAS Matbaa.
