The National Geographic Society - Grants and Investments

The National Geographic Society has awarded over 15,000 grants since its establishment in 1888. The recipients, referred to as National Geographic Explorers, constitute a diverse community of changemakers worldwide, dedicated to advancing the Society's mission of illuminating and safeguarding the wonders of the world.

National Geographic Explorers represent individuals from various backgrounds and regions, engaged not only in exploring mountain tops or ocean depths but also in delving into the microscopic world in laboratories, capturing local community stories in fishing villages, and imparting discoveries in classrooms. The Society funds bold, innovative, and transformative projects in science, conservation, storytelling, education, and technology that align with its focus areas.

Beyond financial support, the Society actively facilitates networking, connections, and learning opportunities for Explorers. It empowers them with cutting-edge tools, technology, and training, enhancing their impact and recognition through storytelling.

Grant opportunities are available at different entry points, offering a dynamic pathway to join the National Geographic community. Whether an aspiring Explorer or an established luminary, each opportunity comes with unique criteria and benefits tailored to meet specific needs and goals.

Level I Grants target individuals earlier in their careers, those aiming to establish themselves in their field, seeking mentorship, or intending to grow their network within the global community of National Geographic Explorers. These grants, highly competitive and with funding requests of up to USD $20,000, are for those with the potential and desire to make significant positive contributions to their field.

Applicants should demonstrate how joining the Explorer Community will advance their careers. Level I Grants are open to individuals entirely new to the National Geographic Society network and those already in the network who are not yet Explorers. Notably, individuals who have previously received grants from the National Geographic Society are not eligible for Level I Grants.

The National Geographic Society is currently accepting pre-applications for Level I Grants. Successful applicants receive funding, unique training opportunities, and access to a network of fellow Explorers, experts, staff, partners, and forums. Applications must be submitted through the online portal, and mailed or emailed applications will not be considered.
