Antanas Sutkus is a highly acclaimed Lithuanian photographer known for his emotionally compelling and insightful portraits. Born in 1939 in Kluoniškiai, Lithuania, his passion for photography emerged early when he used his earnings from peat-digging with his mother to buy his first camera. He began his career as a photojournalist before becoming a freelance photographer in 1968, dedicating himself to capturing everyday life under Soviet rule.
Inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sutkus pursued the goal of "revealing the psychological dimension of contemporary life." His best-known series, People of Lithuania, offers a profound exploration of Lithuanian identity through the faces of its people. Unlike Soviet propaganda's idealized portrayals, Sutkus's work highlights the raw and authentic lives of ordinary individuals.
In 1965, Sutkus gained global recognition for his iconic photographs of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir during their visit to Lithuania. His memorable image of Sartre walking along the Curonian Spit dunes remains one of his most recognized works, showcasing his ability to capture depth and emotion in his subjects.
Devoted to advancing photography as an art form, Sutkus co-founded the Lithuanian Photography Art Society in 1960 and later served as its president. This organization played a vital role in establishing Lithuanian photography on the international stage. Today, Sutkus's photographs are displayed in prominent institutions such as the Lithuanian Museum of Art, the National Library and Museum of French Photography, the International Center of Photography, the Museum of Photography in Helsinki, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
