Antanas Sutkus, a distinguished Lithuanian photographer, is celebrated for his powerful and introspective portraits. Born in 1939 in Kluoniškiai, Lithuania, he developed an early interest in photography, purchasing his first camera with earnings from working alongside his mother digging peat. He started his professional career as a photojournalist before becoming an independent photographer in 1968, dedicating himself to documenting daily life under Soviet rule.
Sutkus drew inspiration from Henri Cartier-Bresson, striving to "capture the psychological essence of contemporary life." His notable project, People of Lithuania, portrays the country's social and cultural transformations. By focusing on the everyday individual, Sutkus's work provided a stark contrast to Soviet propaganda's glorified ideals.
In 1965, Sutkus achieved international recognition with his striking portraits of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir during their visit to Lithuania. His iconic shot of Sartre on the Curonian Spit dunes exemplifies Sutkus's talent for conveying human vulnerability.
An ardent promoter of photographic art, Sutkus co-founded the Lithuanian Photography Art Society in 1960 and served as its president. His contributions significantly influenced the global perception of Lithuanian photography. Sutkus's works are now housed in esteemed collections worldwide, including institutions in Vilnius, Paris, New York, Helsinki, and London.
