Since 2014, The Image Centre (IMC) has been providing research fellowships for anyone interested in photography. These fellowships allow researchers to dive into some of IMC’s most prized photography collections. The Black Star Collection, which has over 250,000 prints showcasing 20th-century photojournalism, is a highlight. IMC also houses archives from photographers like Werner Wolff, Jo Spence, Wendy Snyder MacNeil, and Berenice Abbott, as well as a historic and fine art photography collection.
Come 2025, IMC will be offering four research fellowships. Before applying, make sure to read the guidelines and choose the fellowship that best fits your background. For artists wanting to explore the collections for creative work, the Tanenbaum Fellowship is the one to go for!
Nadir Mohamed Postdoctoral FellowshipThis one comes with $10,000 CAD for travel, research, and other expenses. You’ll need a PhD to apply, and your research should use IMC’s collections or the Toronto Metropolitan University Archives. You’re expected to spend one to three months on-site, anytime from February 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026.
Penny Rubinoff FellowshipIf you have a master’s degree or are a PhD student (but not if you already have a PhD), you can apply for this one, which offers $5,000 CAD. You’ll work with IMC or the University’s archives for two to six weeks, between February 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026.
Elaine Ling FellowshipThis one offers $4,000 CAD, and it’s for those who’ve just finished their master’s or are about to. If you’re already in a PhD program or hold one, this isn’t for you. Research has to be done on-site for one to four weeks, between February 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026.
Howard Tanenbaum FellowshipOpen to anyone, even if you don’t have a degree, this $4,000 CAD fellowship is for independent artists or researchers who want to explore IMC’s collections for artistic purposes. You’ll be expected to propose a creative project and work on-site for one to four weeks, between February 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026.
