The Image Centre Research Fellowships

Since 2014, The Image Centre (IMC) has offered a variety of fellowships aimed at fostering research in the field of photography. These fellowships provide researchers with the unique opportunity to study significant parts of IMC’s photography collections in person. The collections include the renowned Black Star Collection, which features over a quarter-million prints documenting 20th-century photojournalism, a historic and fine art photography collection, as well as archives of prominent photographers such as Werner Wolff, Jo Spence, Wendy Snyder MacNeil, and Berenice Abbott.

In 2025, IMC will offer four prestigious fellowships in support of research related to photography. All applicants are encouraged to carefully review the eligibility criteria and apply to the fellowship that aligns best with their research goals. Artistic researchers are particularly encouraged to apply for the Tanenbaum Fellowship.

  1. The Nadir Mohamed Postdoctoral FellowshipThis fellowship provides a $10,000 CAD stipend for travel, research, and related expenses. Candidates must hold a PhD and conduct research using the collections at IMC or Toronto Metropolitan University Archives and Special Collections. Fellows are expected to complete their on-site research for a duration ranging from one to three months, between February 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026.

  2. The Penny Rubinoff FellowshipOffering a $5,000 CAD stipend, this fellowship is open to candidates holding a master’s degree, including PhD students or candidates, but excluding PhD holders and postdoctoral researchers. Research must involve IMC or Toronto Metropolitan University’s collections. Fellows must be on-site for a period of two to six weeks, between February 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026.

  3. The Elaine Ling FellowshipWith a $4,000 CAD stipend, this fellowship is designed for those who have recently completed or are close to completing a master’s degree. Candidates enrolled in doctoral programs or who hold PhDs are not eligible. On-site research must be conducted for one to four weeks, between February 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026.

  4. The Howard Tanenbaum FellowshipThis fellowship, offering a $4,000 CAD stipend, is open to candidates at any educational level, including independent artists. Research should involve IMC’s collections in support of the fellow’s artistic practice, with a focus on creative methodologies and outcomes.
