The Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, officially recognized as a non-profit institution by the French state, is devoted to the conservation, promotion, and transmission of the artistic legacies of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Martine Franck. Established in accordance with the wishes of its founders, the Fondation extends its scope beyond archival preservation, regularly organizing exhibitions that feature the works of a wide range of photographers. For over twenty years, it has curated an exceptional program of exhibitions that celebrate both historical and contemporary practices in photography, enriching public understanding and appreciation of the medium.
Among the Fondation's most significant initiatives is the Henri Cartier-Bresson Creation Award (formerly the HCB Award), which is conferred biennially. This award aims to support an established photographer—someone with a proven commitment to documentary-style photography—in the development or continuation of an ambitious creative project. The laureate is awarded a grant of 35,000 euros, which is allocated toward the production of a major exhibition at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson and the publication of the associated work, offering a unique opportunity for international exposure and artistic advancement.
