The concept of Memento Mori is a profound and deeply evocative theme in photography, emphasizing the transient nature of life and the inescapable reality of death. This idea, derived from the Latin phrase meaning “remember that you must die,” serves as a poignant reminder of our own mortality and the unstoppable passage of time. By inviting reflection on life’s impermanence, Memento Mori encourages us to confront the inevitability of death not with fear, but with a sense of purpose. It highlights the delicate and fleeting nature of our existence, prompting questions about what makes life meaningful and how we can best navigate the certainty of our eventual end. Such a theme can be both a source of inspiration and comfort, reminding us to cherish the present and fully embrace the moments that define our lives.
Memento Mori in photography becomes a lens through which artists explore these existential questions, revealing what makes life worth living and how different people cope with the certainty of death. Whether through traditional or experimental techniques, photographers have long used this theme to express their interpretations of time, memory, loss, and the beauty found in life’s transient moments.
In this spirit, Memento Mori is an international open call for photographers aged 18 and older. It invites artists from all backgrounds and levels of experience to explore the theme of mortality and life’s impermanence through their work. Submissions are welcome in all forms of two-dimensional images, whether they utilize conventional or non-conventional media, analog or digital processes. This call encourages both traditional and alternative approaches, allowing for a wide range of subjective and creative interpretations. Through this competition, photographers have the opportunity to share their unique perspectives on how we grapple with life’s brevity, and how the awareness of our limited time can inspire us to live fully and intentionally.
