The study of dreams has captivated thinkers, artists, and psychoanalysts for centuries, as a means of unlocking the secrets of the human psyche. While the visual narratives that play out during sleep may appear irrational or abstract, they are often rich with symbolic meaning. Freud famously distinguished between the manifest content of dreams—what we actually see—and their latent content—what these dream images signify at a deeper level. Through careful interpretation, dreams can illuminate the repressed desires, unresolved conflicts, and subconscious processes that drive human behavior.
The unconscious mind operates according to its own internal logic, frequently bypassing the constraints of rationality in favor of metaphor, distortion, and displacement. We shield ourselves from these primal emotions in waking life, but in dreams they emerge unfiltered, demanding attention. To dream, then, is to confront the parts of ourselves we may not fully understand. It raises powerful questions: What does the imagery of your dreams say about your inner life? What truths are cloaked in surrealism? And how do those revelations linger when you open your eyes?
Lucid — In Dreams is an international call for photographic submissions that seek to engage with the dream state as subject, inspiration, or conceptual lens. Open to artists aged 18 and older, this call welcomes a diverse range of two-dimensional image-making practices. Submissions may include both traditional photography and more experimental approaches—digital, analog, mixed media, or alternative processes—as long as they maintain a photographic foundation and convey a unique, introspective point of view. We encourage work that navigates the boundary between the real and the imagined, the conscious and the unconscious.
