The Arnold Newman Prize for New Directions in Photographic Portraiture is a prestigious accolade that recognizes the outstanding work of photographers who demonstrate a captivating and innovative approach to portrait photography. The esteemed award grants $20,000 annually to the selected photographer. A panel of judges meticulously evaluates all submissions and chooses the Top Ten entries. From this shortlist, one ultimate winner and three finalists are chosen for the honor.

The Arnold & Augusta Newman Foundation generously provides the funding for this esteemed prize, while the administration is proudly overseen by the esteemed Maine Media.

The three finalists, along with the ultimate winner, will receive special recognition for their talents and contributions. They will have the opportunity to display their work in an exclusive exhibition hosted at the prestigious Griffin Museum of Photography. Each finalist will also be awarded a $250 stipend in appreciation of their exceptional artistry.

The culmination of this celebration will take place on Saturday, September 30, 2023, during the Visionary Awards dinner in Rockport, Maine, where the recipient of the 2023 Arnold Newman Prize for New Directions in Photographic Portraiture will be honored.

Following the ceremony, the Griffin Museum of Photography will host its annual exhibition featuring the winning photographer's work and that of the three finalists.
