Calling all photographers! The 23rd Annual Smithsonian magazine Photo Contest opens on September 15, 2025, and runs until December 1, 2025, at 5:00 PM EST. This international competition offers photographers the chance to showcase their creativity, technical skill, and storytelling ability across a range of exciting categories. By submitting an entry, participants confirm they are 18 years of age or older and agree to abide by the official rules of the contest.
Who can enter:The contest welcomes photographers 18 and older to compete for recognition in categories such as Wildlife, Travel, People, The American Experience at 250, Artistic Images, and Drone/Aerial, in addition to the prestigious Grand Prize and the Readers’ Choice Award. To maintain fairness, individuals with direct ties to the Smithsonian Institution—including employees, interns, trustees, Regents, emeriti, volunteers, fellows, and research associates—along with their immediate family members and household residents, are ineligible to receive prizes. The Smithsonian retains full authority to make final decisions on entrant eligibility.
