The Smithsonian magazine’s 23rd Annual Photo Contest officially opens for submissions on September 15, 2025, and closes on December 1, 2025, at 5:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. All individuals who choose to participate acknowledge, through their entry, that they are 18 years of age or older and that they have read and agreed to comply with the contest rules.
Eligibility:Photographers who are 18 or older may submit entries in the following prize categories: Grand Prize, Readers’ Choice, Wildlife, Travel, People, The American Experience at 250, Artistic Images, and Drone/Aerial Photography. However, individuals with formal affiliations to the Smithsonian Institution—including employees, Regents, trustees, emeriti, interns, fellows, volunteers, research associates, and their immediate family members (spouses, children, siblings, and parents), as well as members of their household—are not eligible to win prizes. All determinations regarding eligibility will be made at the sole discretion of the Smithsonian.
