Over the last 20 years, Smithsonian’s annual photo contest has received over 470,000 images from photographers worldwide, capturing stunning moments, unique people, and breathtaking landscapes. You can explore this diverse collection by searching locations, topics, or photographer portfolios.
The 22nd Annual Smithsonian magazine Photo Contest is open for submissions from September 18th to December 2nd, 2024, at 5:00 PM EST. Entrants must be 18 years or older and agree to the contest rules.
Who Can Enter:
The contest is open to photographers aged 18 and older across seven categories: Grand Prize, Readers’ Choice, Natural World, Travel, People, The American Experience, Artistic Images, and Drone/Aerial. Smithsonian employees and affiliates are not eligible.
Categories:
Natural World: Animals, plants, landscapes, and natural phenomena.
Travel: Images showcasing places, people, or activities globally.
People: Portraits or group photos.
The American Experience: Events or experiences reflecting U.S. history and culture.
Artistic Images: Creative photography, with or without digital manipulation.
Drone/Aerial: Photos taken using drones or aircraft.
Photos must be taken after January 1, 2021. Cropped photos and minor adjustments are allowed. AI-generated images are not permitted.
Additional Guidelines:
Model and art releases may be required for recognizable people or copyrighted artwork. Photos must comply with local laws, and content that violates others’ rights or is explicit or violent is not eligible.
Ethics:
Photographers must prioritize the welfare of subjects and the environment, disclosing any special equipment or techniques used. Baiting wildlife is prohibited.
