Vibrance is an invitation to look at the world through the lens of movement, intensity, and possibility. At a time when images of crisis and uncertainty frequently dominate public discourse, Rotterdam Photo proposes a different visual approach, one that explores the forces that keep life moving and bring people, ideas, and environments together. Rather than turning away from conflict or difficulty, the theme seeks to discover the energy that emerges in their midst: the vitality of communities, the persistence of nature, and the transformative power of collective experiences.
Vibrance can be found wherever life gathers momentum. It is present in the colours that define a place, the rhythm of bodies moving together, the intensity of a public gathering, and the invisible connections that link individuals across physical and digital spaces. It can emerge through spontaneous encounters, collective action, cultural expression, or the delicate balance of natural ecosystems. These different manifestations of energy reveal how presence, movement, and connection continually reshape our surroundings.
Within this framework, joy takes on a deeper significance. It becomes a conscious response to the world, a way of affirming life, imagining alternatives, and creating new forms of solidarity. Whether expressed through celebration, artistic experimentation, social engagement, or everyday acts of connection, joy can become a powerful means of challenging established narratives and imagining different futures.
Rotterdam Photo brings these ideas together through an international photographic platform that celebrates the diversity of contemporary visual expression. Reflecting Rotterdam's character as a city shaped by migration, movement, and cultural exchange, the festival creates opportunities for local and international perspectives to meet. By connecting personal stories with wider global experiences, Vibrance transforms photography into a shared space for exploring the many ways life continues to evolve, connect, and flourish.
