What happens when an artist is shaped by war without witnessing it firsthand? How does violence echo in the minds of those who survive, flee, or merely listen from afar?
“Echoes of Silence” spotlights photographers who approach war not as reporters but as interpreters of inner conflict. Their work translates collective trauma into personal visual language.
In response to the nonstop stream of war imagery in today’s media, Rotterdam Photo 2026 presents a counter-perspective: no documentary photography, but autonomous work rooted in introspection, symbolism, and psychological depth.
For these artists, war unfolds within memory, family narratives, or subconscious terrain rather than on an external battlefield. Instead of capturing explosions, their images reveal fragments—silences, voids, repetitions, and dislocations—which offer new angles on the relationship between conflict and visual culture.
The exhibition showcases diverse methods, from analog disruption and expressive portraiture to abstraction and symbolic still lifes. Yet all share a single thread: a focus on the inner impact of war. By shifting attention from spectacle to reflection, this edition highlights both emerging and established photographers whose conceptual and idiosyncratic visions expand the conversation around conflict imagery.
