This edition of Rotterdam Photo, titled Echoes of Silence, investigates how war and conflict resonate within the creative process of artists who are not direct witnesses but emotional inheritors of trauma.

The exhibition examines the psychological and symbolic dimensions of conflict as manifested in contemporary photographic practice. Rather than employing the camera as a documentary tool, the featured artists use it as an instrument of introspection—exploring memory, displacement, and the lingering reverberations of violence.

Amid a media landscape dominated by images of destruction, Echoes of Silence proposes a counter-narrative: one that privileges subjectivity, ambiguity, and poetic reflection over spectacle.

Here, war is not externalized but internalized—inscribed in the subconscious, the family archive, or the cultural psyche. The works reveal war’s presence in absence, its echo in silence, and its transformation into artistic language.

Through diverse visual strategies—from abstract to figurative, analog to conceptual—the exhibition redefines how we see and feel conflict.
