The Rotlicht Festival for Analog Photography is thrilled to announce that its flagship exhibition in 2025 will once again take place in the stunning setting of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. With over 1300 square meters of gallery space, the exhibition will launch the festival with 20 standout works selected from our Open Call 2025.

The central theme of this year’s edition is “Life After Extinction?”—a concept that asks artists to consider survival, regeneration, and the human condition in the aftermath of ecological or existential collapse.

As climate change accelerates, conflicts persist, and personal losses accumulate, we are increasingly aware of the fragility of life. However, rather than portraying destruction, this year’s festival aims to focus on what comes next. Can we rebuild? Can new forms of connection emerge? How might we begin again, with ourselves, each other, and all forms of life?

We welcome projects that engage with this concept in subtle, interpretive, or direct ways. Full rules and a Q&A are available on our website. We look forward to your interpretations of life after what seems like the end.
