Once again, in 2025, the Rotlicht Festival will unfold within the awe-inspiring setting of Vienna’s Academy of Fine Arts. With over 1300 square meters of exhibition space, the heart of the festival will beat through the works of 20 artists chosen from our latest Open Call. These artists will open the festival, setting the tone for a year marked by deep contemplation and bold expression.

The question we pose this year is simple yet profound: "Life After Extinction?" What remains when everything known disappears? Is there a possibility of continuity—not just for species and ecosystems, but for hope, for memory, for love?

This year’s festival does not seek to echo the terrifying imagery of collapse that saturates modern media. Instead, we invite visual stories that speak of resilience and reawakening. Whether responding to global catastrophe, intimate personal loss, or the creeping erosion of culture and identity, the projects we seek should probe how life might emerge from endings—how we might begin again.
