Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts - Landscapes: Real or Imagined

This call for entries emerges from a desire to reexamine and expand our understanding of what “landscape” truly means in photography. We invite you to join us in rethinking the genre — considering not only which vistas we choose to celebrate, but also which ones we choose to preserve in memory, and how the act of photographing them might help us envision a more hopeful, inclusive, and sustainable future.

This is an open opportunity to explore, capture, and document the full spectrum of landscapes: from untouched natural environments to spaces shaped and transformed by human hands. We encourage entries that traverse the familiar boundaries — from sweeping mountain ranges and serene coastlines to bustling cityscapes, industrial zones, or even fleeting visual illusions that merely suggest a landscape. Imagination is welcome here, whether the scene exists in the physical world or only in the mind’s eye.

Landscape photography has a long and storied history, shaped by figures such as Carleton Watkins, William Henry Jackson, and later Ansel Adams, whose iconic black-and-white images have deeply influenced public perceptions of the genre. While we honor these pioneering visionaries and celebrate contemporary artists who continue their legacy, we also seek to broaden the frame. Our goal is to present Landscape Photography Today as a vibrant, evolving practice — one that reflects a wider range of perspectives, environments, and creative approaches than ever before.
