Created in 2008, the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac Photography Award was designed to support and encourage contemporary photographic creativity from around the world. Since its inception, the award has aimed to provide photographers with the opportunity to develop ambitious artistic projects while benefiting from the institutional support of a major international museum.
Each year, the museum selects two winning artists, known as laureates, based on the strength and originality of a proposed project. The jury also evaluates how well the project aligns with the artist’s personal creative direction and established visual language. In addition to providing financial support for the development of the project, the museum also helps fund the final production of selected works resulting from the project. These finished works may eventually become part of the museum’s permanent collection, ensuring long-term visibility for the artists and their work.
The award is open to non-European photographers and artists who incorporate photography into their artistic practice. There is no age limit, making the program accessible to artists at different points in their careers. One of the central goals of the prize is to encourage the wide range of forms and practices that exist within contemporary photography on an international scale.
The jury particularly values projects that demonstrate a strong artistic identity and an original creative approach. Proposals that move beyond traditional documentary or reportage photography are especially encouraged. The competition does not impose a specific theme, allowing artists to submit projects that reflect their own research, interests, and creative concerns.
Although applicants are not required to provide a recommendation letter, the program is not intended for beginner photographers. Candidates should already have a developed body of work and some professional experience. During the evaluation process, the jury will pay close attention to the quality of the artist’s portfolio, references, and prior artistic achievements.
