The Environmental Photography Award was established in 2021 by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation as an annual tribute to photographers whose work sheds light on the urgent need to protect our environment. Through their creativity and dedication, participants are invited to use the power of photography to inspire awareness, reflection, and action in the face of today’s environmental challenges.
The Award seeks not only to honor artistic excellence but also to celebrate the breathtaking diversity of our planet. It highlights the many ways in which humanity interacts with nature—whether through destructive practices that threaten ecosystems or through regenerative efforts that offer hope for a sustainable future. To capture these different perspectives, the competition is divided into five thematic categories: Polar Regions, Forests, Ocean, Humanity versus Nature, and Changemakers.
Each year, the Award attracts nearly 10,000 photographs from around the globe. From this vast collection, an international panel of renowned professional photographers carefully selects 36 finalists, ultimately deciding the winners for each category as well as the overall laureate. In addition to these distinctions, the competition also includes a Public Award and a Students’ Choice Award, giving voice to broader audiences in recognizing exceptional talent.
Since its inception, the Environmental Photography Award has gone beyond the competition itself, taking the selected works on tour through international exhibitions. These showcases have already been hosted in countries such as Italy, San Marino, Spain, the United States, Canada, and France, allowing diverse audiences to connect with the powerful stories behind the images. Furthermore, the Foundation publishes a dedicated book each year, ensuring that the collection is preserved and shared with future generations.
As one of the flagship events of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the Environmental Photography Award stands as a cornerstone of the organization’s Green Shift initiative. Through its emphasis on visual storytelling, it aims to inspire collective responsibility and drive meaningful conversations about the future of our planet.
