Prince Albert II Foundation - Environmental Photography Award 2026

In 2021, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation launched the Environmental Photography Award with a clear vision: to give photographers from around the world a platform to share their unique perspectives on the environment and to reward those whose work most powerfully encourages reflection and action. By transforming photography into a tool for awareness, the Award shines a light on both the fragility and the resilience of the natural world.

The competition is designed to honor not only the stunning beauty of Earth’s landscapes but also the complex and often fragile relationships that humans maintain with their environment. These interactions—sometimes destructive, sometimes regenerative—are brought to life through five carefully defined categories: Polar Regions, Forests, Ocean, Humanity versus Nature, and Changemakers. Each category invites photographers to explore a different dimension of our shared responsibility toward the planet.

With nearly 10,000 submissions each year, the Award has grown into a highly respected international contest. From this impressive pool of images, an esteemed jury composed of professional photographers selects just 36 finalists. They go on to determine the winners for each category and name the overall winner, while audiences and students have the opportunity to celebrate their favorites through the Public Award and the Students’ Choice Award.

The reach of the Award extends far beyond Monaco. Its exhibitions have already been welcomed in Italy, San Marino, Spain, the United States, Canada, and France, giving thousands of people the chance to experience the breathtaking visual stories firsthand. Complementing these traveling showcases, the Foundation also publishes an annual book that captures and preserves the year’s most powerful photographs.

Today, the Environmental Photography Award has become much more than a competition—it is a global platform for environmental storytelling. As one of the three pillars of the Foundation’s Green Shift initiative, it serves as a catalyst for dialogue, awareness, and action, reminding us all of the vital role we play in protecting the natural world.
