PhotoPlace Gallery - Portals: New Perspectives Open Call

A portal is an invitation. It signals a place of entry, a point of crossing, or a moment when one space gives way to another. Sometimes it is obvious—a doorway, a window, a gate—but often it is something more subtle: a reflection, a shadow, or a shift in perspective that opens a new way of seeing what lies before us.

For Portals: New Perspectives, we are seeking photographs that explore these moments of passage and possibility. We encourage artists to look closely at the spaces where boundaries meet and where visual transitions occur. Architectural elements such as doorways, archways, stairwells, hallways, and windows can act as powerful compositional devices, guiding the viewer’s gaze deeper into an image. Mirrors and reflections may create unexpected layers, while frames within frames can reveal multiple visual worlds within a single photograph.

Light also plays a vital role in shaping the idea of a portal. A beam of sunlight passing through a window, the glow from an open doorway, or the dramatic contrast between light and shadow can transform ordinary spaces into places charged with mystery and depth. Through careful observation and creative framing, photographers can reveal how these visual thresholds shape the way we experience a place.

We also encourage more conceptual or interpretive approaches to the theme. A portal does not need to be physical. It might represent a moment of personal transformation, a passage through memory, or a shift between emotional states. A landscape might suggest movement from one world to another; a portrait might capture a moment of reflection or inner transition. Whether your work emerges from documentary practice, staged imagery, or abstract exploration, we welcome images that expand the meaning of what a portal can be.

We are delighted to have Ann Jastrab as the juror for this exhibition. She will select up to 35 images for display in our physical gallery in Middlebury, Vermont, and an additional 40 images to be featured in our Online Gallery. All 75 selected works will be included in the exhibition catalog, permanently archived on our website, and promoted through our social media channels with links directing viewers to each photographer’s personal website or portfolio.
