PhotoPlace Gallery - Cyanotype: A Celebration of Process and Possibility Open Call

PhotoPlace Gallery is pleased to invite photographers, visual artists, and interdisciplinary creators to submit work for Cyanotype: A Celebration of Process and Possibility, a juried exhibition dedicated to exploring the rich history, enduring relevance, and boundless creative potential of the cyanotype process. First introduced in 1842 by Sir John Herschel, cyanotype has remained one of the most recognizable and beloved alternative photographic processes, admired for its luminous blue tones, technical accessibility, and capacity for artistic experimentation. While deeply rooted in photographic history, cyanotype continues to inspire contemporary artists who push the medium beyond traditional boundaries, discovering new forms of expression through both established and innovative approaches.

This exhibition seeks to showcase the remarkable diversity of work being created with cyanotype today. Artists are encouraged to submit works in which cyanotype serves as the primary foundation, whether presented as a pure process or integrated with other photographic, printmaking, textile, collage, or mixed-media techniques. Traditional contact prints, photograms, digital negative cyanotypes, toned and wet-process works, prints on unconventional surfaces, layered compositions, and experimental explorations are all welcome. Subject matter is entirely open, allowing artists the freedom to investigate personal narratives, environmental themes, abstraction, portraiture, landscape, conceptual ideas, and beyond.

By bringing together a wide range of artistic voices, Cyanotype: A Celebration of Process and Possibility aims to highlight the ongoing evolution of this historic medium and celebrate the inventive ways contemporary artists continue to reinterpret and expand its possibilities. The exhibition will serve as both a tribute to cyanotype’s rich legacy and a showcase for the innovative work shaping its future.

The exhibition will culminate in a special celebration of World Cyanotype Day on September 26, 2026. As part of this event, PhotoPlace Gallery will host an additional public reception accompanied by cyanotype workshops, live demonstrations, and educational activities designed to engage artists, enthusiasts, and community members alike. This gathering will provide a unique opportunity to honor the history of cyanotype while fostering connections among those who continue to explore and advance the process today. Additional details regarding the celebration and related programming will be announced as the exhibition approaches.
