PhotoPlace Gallery - Cyanotype: A Celebration of Process and Possibility Open Call

PhotoPlace Gallery announces an open call for entries to Cyanotype: A Celebration of Process and Possibility, a juried exhibition examining the enduring significance and contemporary vitality of the cyanotype process. Since its introduction in the mid-nineteenth century, cyanotype has occupied a unique place within the history of photography and printmaking. Known for its brilliant Prussian-blue color and distinctive visual character, the process has remained relevant for nearly two centuries because of its adaptability, accessibility, and remarkable potential for creative innovation.

This exhibition seeks to present a broad survey of contemporary cyanotype-based artwork, highlighting the many ways artists continue to engage with this historic medium. Submissions are invited from photographers, printmakers, mixed-media artists, and experimental practitioners whose work incorporates cyanotype as a central element. Eligible works may include traditional cyanotype prints, photograms, digital-negative processes, toned cyanotypes, wet-process techniques, fabric and textile applications, alternative-surface printing, sculptural interpretations, and interdisciplinary works that combine cyanotype with other artistic methods.

Artists are encouraged to explore the full range of possibilities the medium offers. Whether working within established traditions or pursuing innovative and unconventional directions, applicants should demonstrate a thoughtful engagement with the process and its expressive potential. Subject matter is unrestricted, allowing for a diverse exhibition that reflects the breadth of contemporary cyanotype practice.

Through this exhibition, PhotoPlace Gallery aims to create a platform for artists who are preserving, reimagining, and advancing the cyanotype process. By bringing together a wide variety of approaches and perspectives, the exhibition will celebrate both the historical foundations of the medium and its continuing relevance in contemporary art.

The exhibition will culminate with a special World Cyanotype Day celebration on September 26, 2026. This event will feature an additional gallery reception, educational workshops, hands-on demonstrations, and community activities designed to foster appreciation for the cyanotype process. Artists, collectors, students, and members of the public will be invited to participate in a shared celebration of this historic yet continually evolving photographic medium. Complete details regarding programming and special events will be announced closer to the exhibition dates.
