PhotoPlace Gallery - Cyanotype: A Celebration of Process and Possibility Open Call

PhotoPlace Gallery invites artists and photographers from around the world to participate in Cyanotype: A Celebration of Process and Possibility, a juried exhibition devoted to one of photography’s most enduring and expressive alternative processes. Since its invention in 1842, cyanotype has captivated generations of artists with its unmistakable blue palette, straightforward chemistry, and extraordinary capacity for transformation. What began as a scientific and photographic innovation has evolved into a dynamic artistic medium that continues to inspire experimentation, discovery, and creative freedom.

Today, cyanotype is embraced by artists working across a wide range of disciplines. From traditional photographic prints and botanical studies to contemporary mixed-media works and conceptual explorations, the process offers endless opportunities for reinvention. This exhibition celebrates that spirit of exploration by welcoming works that place cyanotype at the heart of the creative process. Artists may submit traditional cyanotypes, photograms, digital negative prints, toned works, wet cyanotypes, pieces created on alternative materials, and projects that combine cyanotype with other artistic techniques and media.

There are no restrictions on subject matter. Whether your work examines the natural world, explores personal experiences, investigates social themes, or ventures into abstraction, we encourage submissions that demonstrate the versatility, beauty, and imaginative potential of cyanotype. We are particularly interested in work that reflects both respect for the medium’s rich history and a willingness to push its possibilities in new and unexpected directions.

The exhibition will conclude with a special World Cyanotype Day celebration on September 26, 2026, bringing together artists, visitors, and the broader community for a day dedicated to creativity and discovery. In addition to a gallery reception, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in cyanotype workshops, observe demonstrations, and engage with the process firsthand. This event will honor cyanotype’s remarkable legacy while celebrating its continued growth as a vibrant and evolving contemporary art form. Further information about the festivities will be shared as the exhibition date approaches.
