PhotoPlace Gallery and the Texas Photographic Society invite photographers everywhere to submit work for Composed, an exhibition celebrating one of photography’s most essential and expressive elements: composition. Juried by Brian Finke, the exhibition will bring together photographs that reveal how the arrangement of visual elements within a frame can shape meaning, create emotion, and transform the way we see.

Every photograph begins with a decision about what to include—and what to leave outside the frame. A photographer may carefully construct a scene over hours or respond instinctively to a moment that disappears almost as quickly as it arrives. The camera may be still or in motion; the subject may be controlled or completely unpredictable. Yet composition is always present. It is the invisible architecture of the photograph, guiding the eye through the image and creating connections between people, objects, spaces, light, color, and gesture.

Composition can create harmony or tension. It can establish order or embrace chaos. A line can lead us into the distance, a shadow can divide the frame, a gesture can connect two figures, and an empty space can become as powerful as the subject itself. Through framing, perspective, geometry, rhythm, repetition, layering, scale, color, and light, photographers continually find new ways to organize the visible world and give form to experience.

For Composed, we seek photographs in which these choices are fundamental to the image’s impact. We welcome work that is carefully designed as well as images born from intuition and chance. Submissions may be quiet and minimal, dense and complex, formally precise, emotionally charged, or visually unexpected. What matters is the role composition plays in making the photograph memorable.

All photographic genres and processes are encouraged, including portraiture, documentary, street photography, landscape, still life, abstraction, conceptual photography, and experimental practices. Photographers from across the United States and around the world are invited to participate and share their distinctive ways of seeing, framing, and composing the world.
