PhotoPlace Gallery and the Texas Photographic Society invite photographers to submit work for Composed, a juried exhibition dedicated to the art, intention, and expressive power of photographic composition. Juried by acclaimed photographer Brian Finke, the exhibition will explore the many ways photographers arrange, interpret, and transform the visual world within the boundaries of the frame.

Every photograph emerges from a series of creative decisions. Some images are meticulously constructed, with each element carefully considered and deliberately placed. Others are captured in a fraction of a second, relying on instinct, timing, and an immediate response to the world as it unfolds. In every case, composition plays a vital role in shaping how an image is seen and experienced. It directs the viewer’s attention, creates relationships between subjects and surroundings, establishes rhythm and balance, and gives visual structure to a fleeting moment.

For Composed, we welcome photographs in which composition is central to the image’s meaning, atmosphere, or impact. Submitted works may explore framing, perspective, scale, light, color, geometry, gesture, repetition, visual rhythm, negative space, layering, balance, tension, or any of the countless ways photographers organize visual information within the frame. We are interested in images that demonstrate how thoughtful composition can elevate observation, strengthen narrative, create emotional resonance, or transform the familiar into something unexpected.

All photographic genres, approaches, and processes are encouraged, from documentary and street photography to portraiture, landscape, still life, abstraction, conceptual work, and experimental image-making. Photographers working with traditional, digital, alternative, and mixed photographic processes are welcome to submit. The exhibition is open to photographers from across the United States and around the world, and we invite a broad range of perspectives and visual approaches to the art of composition.
