PhotoPlace Gallery and Texas Photographic Society - "Composed" Photography Open Call

PhotoPlace Gallery, in partnership with the Texas Photographic Society, is pleased to invite photographers to submit work for Composed, a juried exhibition exploring the creative possibilities and visual power of photographic composition. Juried by Brian Finke, this exhibition seeks compelling images that demonstrate how the organization of elements within the frame can shape the way a photograph communicates, resonates, and remains in the viewer’s memory.

Photography is an art of choices. Where do you stand? What do you include? What do you exclude? When do you press the shutter? Whether an image is carefully staged and constructed or captured spontaneously in a fleeting instant, every photograph reflects decisions about how the visual world is arranged within the frame. These decisions influence not only what we see, but how we move through an image, where our attention settles, and what relationships or meanings begin to emerge.

Composition can be bold and immediately apparent, or subtle enough to operate almost invisibly. It can be created through lines, shapes, patterns, gestures, colors, shadows, spatial relationships, repetition, symmetry, imbalance, or the deliberate use of empty space. It can bring clarity to a complex scene, create tension between subjects, establish a sense of movement, or turn an ordinary moment into something extraordinary.

For Composed, we are looking for photographs in which composition is an essential part of the image’s strength and identity. We welcome work that explores framing, perspective, light, color, geometry, gesture, visual rhythm, negative space, layering, scale, balance, repetition, and other approaches to organizing the visual world. We are equally interested in compositions that are carefully planned and those discovered through instinct, observation, timing, and chance.

All photographic genres, styles, and processes are welcome. Whether your practice is rooted in documentary photography, portraiture, landscape, street photography, still life, abstraction, conceptual work, experimental processes, or another photographic tradition, we encourage you to submit images that reflect your unique approach to seeing and composing.

Photographers from across the United States and around the world are invited to participate. Composed offers an opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary variety of ways photographers use the frame—not simply as a boundary, but as a space in which relationships are created, stories unfold, and the everyday world is transformed through the act of seeing.
