As the festival arrives at its eighteenth edition, it symbolically steps into a phase of maturity, a moment that invites not only celebration but also critical reflection. This milestone becomes an अवसर to engage deeply with the complex notion of transition—personal, social, and cultural. Coming of Age (18+) examines the idea of growing up not as a fixed legal or chronological threshold, but as a layered and evolving condition shaped by moments of rupture, internal conflict, and conscious self-definition.

Rather than vanishing, innocence undergoes a process of transformation, adapting to new forms of awareness. The individual gradually emerges as a subject who is not only self-aware but also accountable and visibly positioned within a social framework. At the core of this transformation lies the development of autonomy: a shift from being an extension of others—family, community, or expectation—toward becoming a distinct and self-determined entity. The body, in this context, takes on heightened significance as a site where meaning, desire, discipline, and expression intersect. Meanwhile, identity—whether related to gender, social roles, or status—remains fluid, continuously negotiated and reshaped through experience.

The process of coming of age unfolds in a suspended space between childhood and responsibility, where the remnants of playfulness coexist with the gravity of consequential decisions. The notions of what is “permitted” and “forbidden” extend beyond external regulations, becoming internalized frameworks that individuals challenge, reinterpret, and redefine. Within this landscape, the label “18+” functions less as a restriction and more as a symbolic threshold—a marker of liminality that encapsulates the tension between freedom and obligation, individuality and social belonging.

This theme foregrounds both personal and collective dimensions of transition: the first acts of choice, moments of rupture or continuity, gestures of emancipation alongside pressures to conform. It also interrogates the expectations imposed by society in defining what it means to be an “adult.” In doing so, coming of age is understood not as a destination, but as a dynamic and ongoing negotiation between inherited pasts, societal demands, and personal agency.

Ultimately, Coming of Age (18+) offers a space for contemplating the vulnerability, contradictions, and courage inherent in this passage. It encourages audiences to question whether adulthood represents a stable condition or an ever-shifting process of becoming.
