Analog — Made by Hand invites photographers working with film, alternative, and handmade processes to share work that reflects a thoughtful, tactile approach to image-making. This exhibition celebrates photography as a physical and intentional practice—one that values time, material engagement, and the artist’s hand at every stage of creation. In contrast to digital workflows, analog photography encourages slowness and presence, allowing the process itself to shape the final image.
The photographs featured in this exhibition are formed through direct interaction with light, chemistry, and paper. From loading film and making exposures to developing negatives and producing final prints, each step is integral to the work’s meaning and appearance. These images often reveal subtle variations in tone, surface, and texture—qualities that speak to the individuality of handmade processes and the unique nature of each print.
We welcome submissions of work captured using analog photographic methods and/or printed using historical, alternative, or handmade techniques, including traditional darkroom processes. All submitted work must be created through hands-on practice. Because submissions are reviewed digitally, artists should ensure their images effectively communicate the physical presence of the finished print, including details such as paper edges, surface texture, and tonal depth. Please consult the eligibility information below for complete guidelines.
We are honored to have Christina Z. Anderson serve as juror for Analog — Made by Hand. She will select up to 35 images for exhibition in our Middlebury, Vermont gallery, along with an additional 40 images for our Online Gallery. All 75 selected works will be reproduced in the exhibition catalog, permanently archived on our website, and promoted on social media with direct links to each artist’s website.
Awards include:
Juror’s Award: $300
Director’s Award: $200
Honorable Mentions: $50
Every selected artist will be published in the printed catalog and featured online and across our social platforms.
