Photo Place Gallery - "Analog - Made by Hand" Call for Entries

Analog — Made by Hand is an exhibition dedicated to the enduring relevance of analog and handmade photographic practices. In contrast to the speed and immateriality of digital reproduction, analog photography prioritizes physical engagement, technical knowledge, and intentional decision-making. This exhibition highlights work in which the photographic process—exposure, development, printing, and finishing—is inseparable from the final image.

The exhibition focuses on photographs created through film-based capture, darkroom printing, and alternative or historical photographic processes. These methods emphasize material awareness and craftsmanship, allowing time, chemistry, and the artist’s hand to play a visible role in shaping the image. The resulting works reflect a slower, more contemplative approach to image-making, where process is not hidden but revealed.

We are seeking submissions of photographs made using analog cameras and/or printed through traditional, historical, or handmade techniques. All work must be grounded in direct, hands-on photographic practice. Although submissions are reviewed digitally, applicants should submit images that accurately represent the physical characteristics of the final prints. Attention should be given to conveying surface quality, texture, tonal range, and edge detail where these elements are integral to the work. Eligibility requirements are outlined below.

We are pleased to announce Christina Z. Anderson as juror for Analog — Made by Hand. She will select up to 35 works for physical exhibition in our Middlebury, Vermont gallery, and an additional 40 works for presentation in our Online Gallery. All 75 selected images will be included in a professionally printed exhibition catalog and archived permanently on our website. Selected artists will also receive promotion through our social media platforms, with links to their personal websites or portfolios.

Awards:

  • Juror’s Award: $300

  • Director’s Award: $200

  • Honorable Mentions: $50

All selected artists will be published in the printed catalog and featured online.
