Analog — Made by Hand is an exhibition devoted to photography as a deliberate, physical, and deeply intentional art form. At a time when images are often produced and consumed instantly, this exhibition honors practices that require patience, attention, and a direct relationship with materials. Analog photography invites the maker to slow down—to engage with light, chemistry, paper, and time in ways that foreground presence and care. From the exposure of film to the final handmade print, each step becomes an essential part of the creative act.
This exhibition celebrates photographs shaped not only by vision, but by process itself. These works bear the marks of handwork and material decision-making, revealing the beauty of surface, texture, tonal variation, and physical nuance. Whether created in a traditional darkroom or through alternative and historical printing techniques, the photographs in this exhibition demonstrate how craft and intention remain central to the photographic experience.
We invite submissions of work created using analog capture processes and/or printed using historical, alternative, or handmade photographic methods. All submitted work must be rooted in hands-on practice. While submissions are reviewed digitally, artists should ensure that images clearly communicate the physical qualities of the final print, including paper surface, edges, texture, and tonal depth, where applicable. Please review the eligibility requirements below for full details.
We are honored to welcome Christina Z. Anderson as juror for Analog — Made by Hand. She will select up to 35 images for exhibition in our Middlebury, Vermont gallery, as well as an additional 40 images for inclusion in our Online Gallery. All 75 selected works will be reproduced in the printed exhibition catalog, permanently archived on our website, and promoted through our social media channels with direct links to each photographer’s website or portfolio.
Awards include:
Juror’s Award: $300
Director’s Award: $200
Honorable Mentions: $50
All selected artists will be published in the exhibition catalog and featured across our online platforms.
