The 5th edition of the PhMuseum Days Open Call is now officially open for submissions, inviting visual artists from around the world to take part in a unique opportunity to exhibit their work במסגרת an international context. Selected artists will be featured at the PhMuseum Days International Photography Festival, scheduled to take place from 1–4 October in Bologna, Italy—a city renowned for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant contemporary art scene.
This year marks an important development for the festival, as it will be held in conjunction with Photobook Mania, the second edition of PhMuseum’s publishing fair. Together, these two events will create a comprehensive platform dedicated to contemporary photography, bringing together exhibitions, publications, and in-person exchanges between artists, publishers, and audiences.
The open call offers multiple exhibition opportunities. At least three artists will be selected for solo exhibitions within the festival’s new main venue, providing them with a focused space to present their work. In addition, one project will be chosen for a public installation displayed on former municipal billboards, extending the reach of the festival into the urban environment. Up to 40 individual images will be included in a collective sculptural installation, while up to 20 works will be presented through curated screenings.
The theme of this edition, ARCHIPELAGO, reflects the complexities of our contemporary moment. Inspired by the 2005 book by philosopher Massimo Cacciari, the theme invites artists to reflect on the notion of crisis—not only as a challenge, but also as a generative condition that can lead to new forms of coexistence. Artists are encouraged to explore the idea of “cultural islands” and the fragmented realities of our time, while proposing visions that foster dialogue, inclusion, and expanded ways of thinking.
