Submissions are now open for the 5th edition of the PhMuseum Days Open Call, offering visual artists an exciting opportunity to showcase their work at the PhMuseum Days International Photography Festival, taking place from October 1 to 4 in Bologna, Italy. This annual event brings together a diverse community of photographers, curators, and audiences, creating a dynamic space for exchange and discovery.
For the first time, the festival will run alongside Photobook Mania, the second edition of PhMuseum’s publishing fair. This collaboration expands the scope of the event, transforming it into a multifaceted platform where exhibitions and photobooks intersect, and where visitors can experience contemporary photography in both visual and printed forms.
Artists selected through the open call will have access to a range of exhibition formats. A minimum of three participants will be awarded solo exhibitions within the festival’s primary venue, allowing for an in-depth presentation of their projects. One project will be brought into the public sphere through a large-scale installation on former municipal billboards, engaging audiences beyond traditional gallery spaces. Additionally, up to 40 images will be incorporated into a sculptural group installation, and up to 20 works will be featured in curated screenings.
This year’s theme, ARCHIPELAGO, responds to the fragmented nature of our current global landscape. Inspired by Massimo Cacciari’s 2005 work, it frames crisis as both a condition we navigate and an opportunity to rethink how we coexist. The open call seeks projects that reflect on cultural separation and connection—works that question boundaries, explore diversity, and create spaces for dialogue and mutual understanding.
