"Trees" Photography Contest by NYC4PA

Over a century ago, in 1915, Joyce Kilmer wrote his famous words about trees, and their truth still echoes today. Trees are an integral part of the world around us, appearing in every environment, from the busiest cities to the quietest rural landscapes. Their presence can be bold and striking, a lone tree standing in the middle of an empty field, or they can be part of everyday life, rooted in family traditions—a backyard maple that has held a tire swing for generations or the oak that once served as the perfect climbing tree for a curious child.

But trees are far more than scenery; they are a sanctuary for wildlife. Birds find safe havens among their branches, building nests that cradle their young. Squirrels dart between limbs, gathering acorns and leaping fearlessly from branch to branch. Deer and other forest creatures rely on trees for shelter and food, just as humans have for centuries. Trees are the silent guardians of nature, offering sustenance, shade, and even the air we breathe.

Forests and jungles teem with life, creating entire ecosystems where trees provide homes for countless species. A lone tree on a hillside can cast long, graceful shadows that shift as the day passes, while orchards and groves create stunning patterns of color and texture across the land. Some trees stand tall and unyielding, like evergreens braving the winter frost, while others twist and bend, sculpted by time and the elements. Whether admired individually for their unique beauty or collectively for the lush landscapes they create, trees are masterpieces of nature, reminding us of the enduring connection between life, art, and the natural world.
