KODAK, ILFORD, and FUJI are names deeply connected to the history and evolution of photography. For generations of photographers, creating a compelling black-and-white image was a hands-on process that began with choosing the right film, continued through careful shooting and development, and culminated in the darkroom with the making of the final print. Memories of dimly lit darkrooms, enlargers, trays, chemicals, test strips, and the anticipation of watching an image slowly emerge on paper still bring a sense of nostalgia and satisfaction to many photographers.
The world of photography has changed dramatically since those early days. Digital cameras, sophisticated editing software, and smartphones have transformed the ways images are captured, processed, and shared. Yet despite these technological changes, the distinctive power of monochrome photography remains as compelling as ever.
Without the distraction of a full spectrum of color, monochrome images invite us to pay closer attention to light, shadow, form, texture, gesture, contrast, and emotion. Whether rendered in classic black and white, warm sepia tones, or variations of a single color, monochrome photography has the ability to reveal the essential qualities of a subject through subtle gradations from light to dark.
For this call, the process used to create the image is entirely open. Your photograph may have originated on TRI-X film, with a digital SLR or mirrorless camera, through an alternative photographic process, or on the phone you carry every day. Traditional darkroom techniques and contemporary digital methods are equally welcome. What matters is the final image and the strength of its monochrome expression.
If your finished photograph uses a monochromatic palette to create emotion, reveal texture, explore light, or communicate a powerful visual experience, we invite you to submit your work.
