Photography is inseparable from light—its strength, its softness, its direction, and even its disappearance. Tools such as light meters and techniques like backlighting or managing glare are all part of an ongoing relationship with illumination. A well-known image of Grand Central Station, filled with beams of sunlight catching dust in the air, serves as a reminder of how light can transform a familiar place into something unforgettable.
The moment an image is captured often carries as much weight as the subject it contains. Morning light differs profoundly from evening light; sunrise and sunset offer distinct emotional and visual qualities. A photograph taken at one time of day may feel incidental, while the same scene captured under different lighting conditions can gain depth, drama, and resonance.
This call seeks images where light—its presence, absence, or specific placement—makes a decisive difference. Reflections, flare, shadows, artificial illumination, glowing lampshades, nighttime city lights, and natural rays all offer opportunities for transformation. Examples of light’s impact are everywhere. Submissions should highlight photographs in which light is not secondary, but central to the image. All 2D photographic formats are welcome.
